Time well spent

Bindu’s passion for spirituality could always be seen from the way he interacted with the youth.

In the early 1990’s, Bindu, along with others in his age bracket, would spend time with youngsters in the Nirankari Satsang Bhawan.  Play schemes, going swimming or to the park, along with many other trips in the orange van with Vicky was a fond memory.

Along with having fun, Bindu was one of the mentors who would sit with us youngsters and spend time explaining spiritual concepts.

In the old Smethwick bhawan days, I remember being put into his group for Avtar Bani discussion.  One thing which always stuck was when he asked me where I thought Nirankar was.  This was pre-Gyan days but like everyone else, I knew God was everywhere. He probed further and asked me to further explain.  I must have said something like God was like air, everywhere but you can’t see it.  He then said, if you went into space, you don’t find air there.  There is no oxygen but Nirankar is still there!  Inspired by this, I have used this explanation myself in Bal Sangat with many children.

Another time at London Bhawan, at another youth session, I was put into Bindu’s group.  He explained to us how to focus on Nirankar during simran and how to stop the mind from wondering.  He explained how his wonderful grandfather, Respected Papa ji would train the mind to focus during meditation by drawing a spot on the radiator and focussing upon it.

I had the pleasure to remind Bindu of these experiences when he shared his love and appreciation for my late father.  Despite Bindu’s ill health, he remained in awe of Nirankar. His contented smile full of bliss and love for Nirankar….full of gratitude, positivity and acceptance was and will always be a huge lesson in practical spirituality, which will continue to guide me.
